Aged 52, Gilles van Kote, is the deputy chief editor of Le Monde, the most influential French daily newspaper. He was a sports writer for almost twenty years (he covered, among other things, the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics), before becoming an environmental journalist in 2006. He also wrote on food security issues and took part in the Ecocide project in 2014, an investigation of Le Monde on environmental traffics and crimes, funded by the European Journalism Centre (EJC).
